Old Man Lookout is a 5 Bedroom/ 3 bath vacation rental at the base of Old Man Mountain. In 2009 we (Tim and Jan Talsma) thought we would poke around and see what properties were available around Estes Park, CO for some investment and as a family destination and rent it out in between visits. Our realtor took us to places that we saw on-line that looked interesting to us. In the end, a few were possibilities; 2 empty properties/lots and 1 home. We did actually put an offer on one of the empty properties…it was not accepted. But the home at the base of Old Man just caught my eye. It needed some work, as it was “stuck in the 70’s”, but it was large, had property (15 acres) attached to it and was quiet and quite private, but very close to everything in town and the Rocky Mountain National Park.
We did end up purchasing Old Man Lookout.
In the next few years, in the off seasons of renting, we (with lots of help from friends) updated the home. The bedroom floor received new paint and carpet and light globes. The kitchen was totally updated with a new layout, new appliances, cabinets, counter tops, lights, paint and flooring. The dinette received new paint, flooring and chandelier as well. And the big dining room also received new paint and new chandelier. The outside reinforced decking and railing were replaced with cedar. The basement entry way was also updated with new flooring and paint. A 5th sleeping space was added a couple of years ago on the ground floor, and also updated the laundry with paint and flooring and new appliances.
The Town of Estes Park implemented new rules of late for those of us who rent to vacationers who visit the area. With these new rules came the egress window rule. Most of the windows in the home have now been replaced with new, functional windows for our visitors to better see the sights around them from within the home. Even the living room and dining room have nice new viewing spaces.
But we live in Michigan and our vacation home is in Colorado.
We have been renting this property since 2010. To be able to rent so far from home, we do need a property management company to bring in vacationers and to clean the home to ready it for the next group of vacationers.
